Fabric is familiar with flesh. And it is part of the emotional corporeal mediation between human beings. In this exhibition, the works by Madeline Hernandez, Cairus Larsen, and Mica Lilith Smith, use fabric and abstraction to give voice and form to the ways we regard physical presence and empathetically engage with one-another.

Madeline Hernandez uses humor and abjectness to disarm and complicate the power dynamics that are present within objectification. Hernandez’s works create situations where we have to consider the ridiculous strangeness of having a physical form.

Cairus Larsen gives viewers objects that must be used; either individually or intimately with someone else. This work asks participants and viewers to be self-critical of the ways we respect each others’ bodily autonomy.

Mica Lilith Smith’s wall hanging pieces use stylized text and fragmented photographs to create compositions that evoke intimacy and sensuality. She uses the social and personal complexities of her own identity as a trans woman as a lens through which to investigate these ideas.
